"Dreamers build castles in the sky; Psychotics live in them; Psychologists collect the rent; Sorcerers serve the eviction notices" - Brother Moloch 969
The question most asked by many Novices is: "Are Spirits, Angels and Demons real or are they just figments of our mind?" Many debates and arguments have ensued over the years regarding this question. There are a few different opinons but for this old time Sorcerer, they are most definitely REAL.
Some years ago, I attempted to use AOL (more like A.O.Hell! and their chat rooms and groups. From my brief visit to that part of the Net, let's just say that I felt the quality of people hanging out in those groups was very low at best. (Especially the so-called "Ceremonial MagicKians") One of them had the temerity to tell me that he and his co-horts thought my ideas silly. LoL (Okay that's always quite humorous coming from people who are less successful than yourself.)
Normally I could care less what some wannabe thinks of me but for some reason I was bored and figured I would ask the reason and he replied, "Your ideas about Spirits being real are ignorant and childish" Okay I found out and thanked the know-it-all for his candidness and excused myself from the room of incompetent losers. (Remember: there are those who talk and there are those who actually do)
WHY work with the hypothesis that Spirits are artificial constructs of our minds? Simple: It's easy to manage the practice of Evocation/Summoning & Invocation when you believe it's all in your own head.
The premise is that "The Gods are there for you not you there for the Gods". This is a modern reframe and it fits the mentality of many modern thinkers. All too often, modern MagicKians think themselves as Psychologists or as I like to term them 'Psyco-logists' because they're in their own head. It's a MAJOR EGO turn-on to say, "Hey I'm a MagicKian and I can do MagicK because I understand psychology". LoL Yeah okay Sparky you THINK you understand.
There's a serious flaw in the whole Psychology thing folks: there's no proof that it works! That's the big joke! Some time ago, a reporter did a survey at a convention for Psychiatrists (and I believe Psychologists were attending as well) only to find out that NOT ONE of the attendees interviewed said that s/he cured any of their patients. (Talk about a scam!) I mean I find it absurd that modern people will point fingers at Occultists, Metaphysical folk and religious people as quacks, frauds and superstitious folks and yet these same accusers give credence to a so-called system of mental study that has yet to provide any proof that it works.
The whole discipline of Psychology/Psychiatry is rife with as much chicanery and tomfoolery as your typical fraudulent 'faith healer' except the difference is that insurance companies actually pay for the former rather than the latter. Essentially, the whole of psychology is about one thing: Money. When you apply Occam's Razor to the field and root out the so-called "in the client's best interest' and 'wanting to make a difference in the world one patient at a time' - stock cliches that sound good but have so little meaning - it's best to look upon this field as a money pit with as many quacks as there are quack doctors running around in the AMA.
Therapy is a realm that many ministers, preachers and priests can work just as easily as the so-called doctors of psychiatry and psychology. How? Just sit and listen. Get the troubled soul to talk about themselves and their problems. Offer suggestions for self-help such as journaling, prayer, meditation, relaxation, me-time, vacations, personal reflection, group study/therapy, and other such things.
One of the biggest downfalls of psychology and psychiatry is that there is no consensus as to when someone is cured. In act, some 'dcotors' of these "disciplines" believe no one is ever truly cured of anything. (Sounds like a money making scam to me!) The patient is told to come until s/he feels they've arrived at a comfortable place in their life. (Um pardon me but that's not scientific!) And some folks are judged by these psych-ologists/iattrists about their lives, attitudes, emotions and general mental health. And what's worse: big business is buying into this scam! (Scary eh?)
But the world of the Occult, and primarily the disciplines of Ceremonial MagicK including lodge type group such as BOTA, Golden Dawn, SoL, AA, OTO, and so on, have adherents who buy into this silly nonsense. "It's all Jungian symbolism!" Really? Bullshit. Prove it. The funny part is: they can't. Psychology and Psychiatry are no more sciences than faith healing is. A science is something that can be repeatedly proved but these alleged sciences are unable to get sustained, long term results as each case is different. Sorry but that's NOT how science works!
But Joe Sixpack who is a Adeptus Magus in his Golden Dawn lodge has this notion that the Gods are 'archetypes' and projections of our subconcious out onto the 'Collective Unconscious' (a term coined by Carl Jung the father of modern Psychology) which is quackery at its finest. Yes it's all in our heads. I've told many of these so-called Maguses that if it's all just in our head, then any doctor of Psychology can call themselves a Magus in MagicK and any Psychiatrist is a Shaman. LoL Yeah right.
What about the other side of the coin? Let's examine it then, eh?
"The Gods, Spirits and the Dead are real and exist independely of us"
This premise seems to be superstitious and in truth it is. But so what? It's what I prefer to call, "A Useful Belief," in that it may or may not be true BUT it is useful. Belief is at the core of superstition, religion and Magic, not cold hard logic (like psychology pretends to use). A superstitious belief is something that you internalize, attach emotion to and accept as fact. These sorts of beliefs work for many who choose to believe in them.
There are estimated over 50 million practitioners of African Traditional Religions who implicitly believe in the powers of Spirits and NPEs (Non-Physical Entities). These folks are superstitious but they get results. Many of them are highly successful business owners. In fact, in Brazil and South America, many board members of large corporations have professional Mediums on the board who make contact with a particular Spirit of a former VP, CFO, CEO, & etc, to help with modern business decisions. Sound silly? No wose than if you're sitting on a couch telling some schmuck about your sex life at $200+ per hour.
Belief in religion and Spirits does work. There are far more numerous examples and especially those deemed miraculous than there are pretend MagicKians who make up words and use all sorts of silly jargon for their workings such as 'circumnambulations', 'banishings' (when it should be banishments!) and 'assumption of the God Form'. Part of the allure of the modern mind-set by Ceremonial MagicKians is the notion that they're somehow a step above since they know all of this silly jargon and they pretend to be 'Gods' coming down from on high. (What's also funny is how Satanists have jumped on this goofy bandwagon of Magic = Psychology)
It's far easier, in my informed opinon, to believe in Gran Bwa or the Green Man, go out to the woods and leave HIm an offering and make a request and then have faith it will work. The difference is that the Modern so-called MagicKian will look at MagicK as something psychological and an old time practitioner will use the "Useful Belief" that Magic & Sorcery and Metaphysics are real and only require a wee bit of faith to work NOT a whole retraining of the mind to believe all of this modern mumbo-jumbo of psychology and psychiatrists.
